Vitiligo
It is a pigmentation disease of unknown cause, in which white areas appear on the skin. Mostly, clinical findings begin under the age of 20. Vitiligo is considered an autoimmune disease. It is not a contagious disease.
Lesions may be generalized to the face, trunk, arms and legs. Or it may involve a single area of the body segmentally. Or the area around the mouth, hands and feet, which we call acrofacial, may be affected. The condition in which more than 50% of the body surface area is affected is called universal vitiligo. Sometimes the disease can be seen in a mixed pattern.
It is very important in examination and diagnosis with Wood's lamp. If necessary, a biopsy can be taken.
Topicals (cream etc.) and phototherapy can be used in the treatment. Sun protection is the most important step of treatment.
