Fungal Infections

The most common fungal disease we encounter in dermatology is fungal infection of the foot and nail. The fungal infection of the nail can cause yellow discoloration, breakage, or thickening of the nails. This infection is more common in individuals who have sweating problems or whose feet are damp.

In fungal infection of the feet, desquamation between the toes or on the soles of the feet, thickening (similar to calluses) or vesicles on the soles of the feet may be seen. Apart from medications, the most important point in the treatment is to keep the feet dry and to disinfect the shoes with sprays recommended by the doctor. When there is no involvement of the nails in the fungal infection of the feet and the fungal disease is not severe, cream and spray treatments are prescribed for approximately 3 weeks.

If the patient also has nail involvement, systemic treatment must be added. In this case, the treatment may last up to approximately 3-4 months. Even if improvement is achieved after treatment, the disease may recur, if the patient keeps his feet moist again and does not pay attention to hygiene.
